You shoot the film, you record the sound, then what? Do you have to sound strip the film, or just put image and sound together on a video tape is there another way? How does this work when shooting in 16mm.

yes, you put the sound on the film or on the video tape. same thing with 16, but in that case optical sound is more common than mag. it's exposed onto the edge of the film when you make your print.
if you're looking for something more exotic, it's also possible to put smpte code on the film's sound track and slave something to that, or use a mechanical or electronical interlock mechanism to run sprocket by sprocket, or sprocket by pulse, or pulse by spike, or whatever by whatever. it's a jungle out there...
